Since Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) came into effect in 2014, enforcement by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) has increased steadily, with hundreds of enforcement decisions issued against organisations to date. Financial penalties have also become more significant: after a total of S$1.28 million in fines in 2019, the PDPC has continued to issue fines annually, supported by enhanced powers to impose penalties of up to 10% of an organisation’s Singapore turnover or S$1 million, whichever is higher. As public awareness of data protection rights grows and cyber threats escalate, organisations can expect continued scrutiny and rising compliance expectations under the PDPA.
