Coaching is the provision of guidance, encouragement and support to help people learn while doing the job. With the growing emphasis on teamwork, collaboration and the bottom line, managing by mandate is no longer practical. In its place, we find the coach - a manager who actively encourages employee commitment and fosters sustained, superior performance. The coach who acts as a guide by the side intervenes and provides scaffolding when necessary, but otherwise, fades in the background to encourage self-directed problem-solving while unlocking team members' potential, at the same time maximizing the coach's performance.Good coaching skills are thus necessary for all supervisors and team leaders. Empowered coaching defines the essentials of coaching - what it involves, how to do it and why it is necessary as part of the performance management cycle through role-plays, reflective exercises, case studies and a skills workshop.
